December 20, 2021

With the New Year fast approaching why not get started on a new upholstery project. Whether you’re a seasoned upholsterer or new to the world of upholstery our Back to Basics Upholstery Guide for 2022 will give you some great hints and tips on how to get started.

Deciding on a Project

Before you get going it is best to decide on which project it is you want to start on, this way you can ensure you can get the correct tools that you need to get going. Whether you want to revamp an old piece of furniture or start something completely new, we have the right tools to help. We recommend now choosing a more simplistic project when new to upholstery so you can build your skills.

Our Recommendation

Why not look at starting with a footstool, these have a fairly simple  design , with all the materials and tools you need to get started available at J A Milton.

If you want to get started on your footstool now, we offer a footstool starter kit, which includes everything you will need! See our previous blog below, detailing how and what you will need to make a footstool.

How To Make a Footstool

Upholstery Tools To Get You Started

Whichever project you decide on there a few tools at we would recommend for getting you started, these include:

  • Magnetic Hammer – helping to get the tacks in the right place
  • Staple Gun – this is an affordable alternative to hand tacking
  • Tack Remover – helping you correct issues if the tacks end up in the wrong place
  • Tailors Scissors – these will stop snagging or tearing the material while cutting

Further research into your chosen design will help you to discover any other tools you may need for that project.
