What Are Hair & Fibre Fillings And What Are They Used For?

March 21, 2022

In upholstery, stuffing furniture is an important task that requires a range of different fillings for different projects. Whether you have a furniture piece that isn’t quite comfy enough for you, or you have found a great antique piece that you want to restore, J A Milton provides everything you need.

Hair and fibre fillings are used to stuff furniture such as chairs & sofas, for arms, cushions and seats. Quite often, worn out seats become saggy, flat and simply uncomfortable. Rather than buying a new piece of furniture, why not reupholster it? Improve the feel of your sofa while extending the lifespan. You could use cotton or foam fillings to create a soft, bouncy feel to your furniture. This is a suitable option for thin cushions for headboards. However the traditional, best practice option (and our favourite), is hair & fibre fillings.

We have the option to use 100% animal hair fillings! This is the most commonly used filling in upholstery today, due to the softness, durability and being easy to work with. Our product is made of 80% pig hair and 20% horse mane, so it is completely genuine. This is a great option when restoring classic antique furniture, to keep the comfortable and firm feeling, while maintaining the unique delicate details. This option is the highest quality but due to this, it is the most expensive option. Also, we understand some people may not be comfortable using animal materials.

In this case we offer ginger coir! This is a great alternative to animal hair, made of natural coconut husk. This is extracted from between the shell and the inside of the coconut. This fibre is more firm and rough, ideally used for doormats, mattresses and for general coarse filling in upholstery. In furniture, it can create a great firm feeling, which is ideal for restoring chair and sofa arms. This coir is fire retardant which is vital in upholstery, keeping yourself and your furniture safe. Additionally, due to the natural fibre of our ginger coil, it maintains great ventilation and humidity control.

If you want the perfect combination of both fibres, without the price tag of animal hair, we encourage you to opt for hair & coir mixed filling. This provides the sturdiness and coarse element of the coir, creating a firm feel to your furniture, whilst being malleable to work with, and maintaining a soft, comfortable feel. This is great for filling seats in upholstery!
